The 2026 Winter Social; A Night of Laughter, Dancing, and Slime

On January 23rd, The Newman School hosted its second annual Winter Social at the Brookline Teen Center, where learning to salsa dance became a popular group activity (as seen in the photo below). The event was full of music, games, and laughter, as students made slime and took photos! The event started at 5:30 pm and concluded around 8:30 pm, although the student council began setting up for the Social at around 5 o'clock. The process involved blowing up balloons, hanging streamers, and taping tens of paper snowflakes to the walls. The decorations ensured that everyone would enjoy the atmosphere, while playing games, eating food, or taking pictures.

The most popular games played at the Social were foosball, spikeball, and pool, although there was one station that stood out from the rest — the slime table. Hana Cosovic, a freshman, stated that the best part about the slime table was "being with friends, making slime together, and talking." Antonio Budia, a sophomore, seconded Hana's point by stating that "[the slime] was fun because there were a lot of people to connect with [at the station]." Students made snow slime, colored it with clay, and put it in ziploc bags to keep for themselves or gift to friends. The slime table was one of the two main student council sponsored activities, as the student council's photo booth was also an exciting addition to the event.

The photo booth let students take nice pictures upon a streamered and ballooned background, inviting them to have fun while photographing their memories. Groups of friends posed together for pictures, either nicely or funnily by holding up props of glasses and snowflakes. Students could take photos by themselves or with friends, as a large ring light and camera were set up to ensure the photos turned out well. Photo booth props were also provided, offering students another way to take funny or silly photos. The photo booth was a great addition to the Social, giving students the opportunity to take nice photos together, something not previously available at Newman socials.

The Newman Winter Social is a wonderful tradition promising fun, games, and memories for all who attend. This event was hosted by the student council and party planning committee, who had been planning it for two months and were thrilled to have so many students join in on the fun. Dalia Katz, a sophomore, emphasized this by explaining she "really enjoyed setting up for the winter formal, [as her] favorite part was creating the backdrop for the photo booth with tinsel curtains and glitter banners." This year's Winter Social was a success, and the school is already looking forward to the next year's Social.
