New Global Roots Club Connects Students Through Culture!

As clubs officially start up for the school year, there's one club that I’d love to focus on. The Global Roots Club is a growing club that has been a highlight during our weekly assemblies. They are dedicated to celebrating the many different cultures from around the world to connect us globally.

This week, I had the honor of interviewing Profe De La Mata and students involved with the club. Mia Lin ‘28 explains that the Global Roots Club is “a way to build community with others you may not have interacted with, you get to see a different side of people because [their cultures are] not in the targeted side of the class curriculum.”

The teacher, Profe De La Mata, shares the inspiration behind the club and tells us “I was thinking about [making a] Hispanic culture club, but then I thought it wouldn't be as successful so I thought about how to make it more inclusive which is how this came about. We often don't have time to celebrate traditions, or to celebrate different cultures and unnoticed holidays.” This club makes students feel seen, heard and represented. Lin shares, “Personally, I came to this club because my culture is not very represented here and I wanted to discover more about it here.”

Global Roots Club is doing a great job of bringing light to cultures most people don't have the chance to learn about and, as Profe De La Mata states, “bringing awareness to social issues that affect immigrant communities making students feel seen and heard/represented.” They are also attempting to partner with Cardinal Cares to help people affected by everything that's happened in recent years.

Students more interested in learning more can visit the club in room 41. It's a great opportunity to pursue cultures you might not have learned about and bond with others!
