Newsman Debate Column: What Floor at Newman is the Best?

Welcome back to the Newsman Debate column. The topic for this debate is “What floor at Newman is the best?” The Newman Community has spoken - with 27 responses - and the best floor is … the second floor! In second place came the front room, and in third the fifth floor.

Starting with the fifth floor, students said that this was the best floor because it “has the freshest air and most sunlight.” Calum Scott stated that “it is the easiest floor to move around on.” One comment that defended the third floor being the best was by Holt Sievers saying, “The third floor is the best because it is close to all other floors. Need to go all the way up to the fifth floor? It is only a relatively quick walk up. Need to go all the way down to the basement? It is only three sets of stairs down, and going down stairs is faster than going up (which is why the third floor is superior to the similar second floor).” Lincoln Hein defended the front room being the best saying that the “front room is cool and open.” Nia Jablenski expressed her “love [of] taking naps on the little benches” in the front room. A comment made by a student defending the basement said that “It’s the most fun floor since everyone can do almost anything in the basement.”

Now onto the second floor. Eric Lechpammer stated that the second floor contains the “Newman room, film room, and the library…[it] is simply stacked, no debate!” Another student said, “The second floor is the best because it has the library AND the SSC, two of my favorite places in Newman!” Leo Margalit states that “the second floor has the library. Must I say more?” and Basile Badea states that it is the best because it “has the smallest branch of BPL and [is] a good chill room.” One student talked about the “comfort” of the carpet and Billy Brogan mentioned the “good tools” that the second floor contains.

The people have spoken, and it seems that the Newman community feels that the best floor at Newman is the second! They also seem very adamant that the worst floor is the 4th. The classes with the most responses were the 7th graders. Thank you for your responses and stay tuned for the next debate.
